Mentor: B.B. Cael, Assistant Professor, Geophysical Sciences

Rafe Knight is rising fourth year in the college studying Math and Geophysical Sciences. His interests involve applying idealized mathematical models to paleoclimate. He is particularly interested in the dynamics of the carbon cycle when perturbed from steady state and the carbonate buffer system. He worked with Professor B.B. Cael to constrain the weathering sensitivity over the Cenozoic and the broader Phanerozoic.

“Working with Professor Cael led me to step into the world of Bayesian statistics and add a new aspect to my quantitative toolbox, thanks to the incredible members of the Bayes reading group! I had the opportunity to develop a deep appreciation for the power of Markov Chain Monte Carlo Simulations, reason through limitations in paleoclimate reconstructions, and explore new packages in the Julia programming language.”
