CSEi visitors are hosted by UChicago faculty sponsors, and potential visitors are encouraged to engage a UChicago faculty member who will serve as a sponsor. While nominations by faculty sponsors are preferred, self-nominations from qualified individuals will also be considered.

We welcome visitors for an academic quarter (9 weeks), or for a shorter time (e.g. 2 weeks) for visitors who are committed to visiting a few years in a row. Financial support and formal visiting appointments are available and will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Nomination Process:

UChicago faculty sponsors can nominate a visitor by emailing info-csei@uchicago.edu. Visitors must be employed at a home institution (academia, private sector, public sector, etc.) and have proof of health insurance.  Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis and should be submitted at least 3 months before the proposed visit. Nominations should include:

  • An endorsement of the potential visitor;
  • Short research proposal that includes what the visitor would work on at UChicago and how they would contribute to intellectual exchange at the CSEi;
  • CV of proposed visitor; and
  • Proposed dates of visit.

Selection Criteria:

Nominations will be reviewed by CSEi leadership, and the most promising will be invited to work with CSEi to develop a budget and plan for the visit. Visitors will be selected based on intellectual merit, potential to advance the field of climate systems engineering, and synergy with research interests at UChicago.

Reporting and Responsibilities for CSEi Visitors:

  • Take an active part in the life of the CSEi, including its events and conferences.
  • Offer a lecture or workshop related to their work on climate systems engineering.
  • Submit a 200–500-word summary by the conclusion of the visit; and,
  • Provide copies of, or links to, materials resulting from the visit, such as white papers, publications, photographs, or videos. Resulting materials should acknowledge the visit to CSEi.
