The Climate Systems Engineering initiative (CSEi) at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for its 2026 cohort of CSEi Postdoctoral Researchers, to be appointed at the rank of Research Associate.

The CSEi Postdoctoral Researchers Program seeks outstanding early-career scholars from across disciplines who are eager to advance understanding of the benefits, risks, and governance of technologies that might reduce the impacts of accumulated greenhouse gases. Areas of focus include sunlight reflection methods (SRM), open-systems carbon removal, local interventions to prevent glacial melt, as well as the social, ethical, and policy dimensions of these technologies.

“Climate systems engineering raises some of the most important scientific and social questions of our time,” said David Keith, CSEi Faculty Director. “We need people from physics to philosophy to engage with the technical, ethical, and governance challenges of when and how these technologies might be used responsibly. Our goal with this program is to bring in bold, creative scholars who want to push the field forward.”

Postdoctoral Researchers will work with faculty mentors across the University of Chicago, pursue research supported by CSEi, and build collaborative networks with affiliated researchers and peers across various disciplines. The program will provide opportunities to take part in defining this rapidly emerging field, access the University of Chicago’s world-class resources, and collaborate with renowned faculty from across campus. Prospective applicants are encouraged to reach out to faculty whose interests align with their own.

Accepted Postdoctoral Researchers at the rank of Research Associate will be appointed for a two-year term, starting between August 3 and September 15, 2026. Applications must be submitted via Interfolio by 11:59 p.m. ET on November 18, 2025.

Application instructions, qualifications, and further details are available on the CSEi website.
